Clinic
At the residency clinic, we focus on giving residents extensive outpatient experience early in their training Thus, first year residents are assigned two half days each week, second years are assigned three half days each week, and third years are assigned four half days each week. First years see an average of 4-6 patients per half day, second years 7-10, and third years 10-14. Upper level residents generally see patients every 10-15 minutes, which makes the transition into practice following graduation smooth and easy.
Upon entering the program, you will be assigned your own panel of patients. You will be responsible for their complete medical care, including performing any needed office procedures. Continuity of care is emphasized; and, whenever possible, patients are scheduled with their assigned physician.
The clinic itself is quite busy, incurring about 21,000 - 23,000 patient visits per year. The full range of office procedures can be performed in the clinic, including treadmills, OB ultrasound, and colposcopies (for a full list, see below). In addition, the clinic is staffed with a full-time patient educator, who can instruct patients on just about any health care topic, including asthma, diabetes, and weight loss.
